Description of Project

The Easton Safer Streets project was developed by the community and Bristol City Council in order to make streets safer and more attractive to walk and cycle in. The focus on this section of the wider scheme was to help create a more enjoyable and attractive route for walking and cycling to school; the design was to sever key commuting routes to reduce private car use and make it more appealing to walk or cycle to work or school.

ETM were appointed as the Principal Contractor to undertake the civils element of the project including all traffic management.

Our Role on the Project

  • ETM undertook all works to improve safety at junctions including installation of pedestrian crossings, footway widening, build outs and speed humps.
  • ETM built out into the carriageway to upgrade the pedestrian and cycling infrastructure by making the footway wider.
  • Throughout the area, there were all new kerb realignments, new bollards built in, and new cycle stands.
  • ETM constructed a new roundabout with cobbles and re-laid natural stone.
  • ETM installed a new drainage run including new gullies, man holes and catch puts along the route.
  • Complete traffic signal refurbishment including mast arm, cabs, duct runs and sockets for signals.
  • ETM moved all existing drainage and engineers worked closely with Bristol City Council to build in more service points and ensure no standing water on the highway.
  • For the construction of the footpath, ETM used recycled type 1 from our own crushing and screening division produced according to WRAP protocol. The use of recycled aggregates provided large cost saving for Bristol City Council against quarried materials, as well as ensuring the project was in line with ISO:14001.
  • ETM delivered the materials from our batching plant in South Bristol daily, saving on transport, time, and carbon footprint.
  • ETM liaised with Network Rail and developed specialist RAMS, as project work involved working underneath a functioning railway bridge. All waste was returned to ETM’s recycling facility in South Bristol, achieving zero waste to landfill.
  • ETM’s QHSE Manager attended the site weekly to ensure safe, tidy conduct in conjunction with the Bristol Code of Conduct.

Traffic Management

  • ETM’s in-house LANTRA trained operatives were on site to implement and manage all the traffic management. This included road closures, diversions, advanced warnings, and notices. ETM provided CAD drawings and managed all elements in-house for simplicity and cost savings.
  • ETM implemented temporary white lining, heras fencing and extra signage for clear direction throughout the site.
  • ETM used footway boards to maintain pedestrian safety at all times, in line with the Bristol Code of Conduct for Streetworks.

White Lining

Our in-house line marketing crews were on site to complete all the marking throughout the scheme. We used an anti-skid high friction surface paint.
