Description of Project

Airport Road is a major project in Bristol to improve sustainable transport at the same time as road enhancements to ensure safer, more accessible routes for residents to travel by foot, bike, or bus, as well as supporting future housing in this part of the city. It is an important part of the City highway network whilst also being a residential area with houses fronting and in close proximity to the highway. ETM were appointed as principal contractor on this project.

Our Role on the Project

  • ETM installed a new drainage run throughout the site, including new gullies, man holes, and catch pits.
  • Refurbished traffic signal system including mast arm, cabs, duct runs and sockets for signals.
  • ETM moved existing utility network from within the carriageway to new location within footways.
  • Carriageway had heavy traffic and hence required maintenance – ETM cold milled the existing carriageway and lay Geotech GlasGrid for asphalt reinforcement. We then laid an SMA, binder, and a Hot Roll Asphalt to the finished level.
  • Replaced previous footway with upgraded pedestrian cycle path on the Northern side of Airport Road.
  • ETM adjusted one junction to accommodate construction of widened pedestrian cycle facilities.
  • Constructed new parking bays.
  • Used own fleet of tippers for subsoil removal, all returned to own waste transfer station in South Bristol to divert from landfill.
  • ETM widened and realigned a junction to improve crossing facilities, including new carriageway construction and utility diversions.
  • Replaced and upgraded 4 bus stops with raised kerbs and safe haven paving treatment as road is busy bus route.

Traffic Management

  • ETM undertook all traffic management at this heavy traffic flow location with dynamic management. Inbound and outbound routes had to be open at all times.
  • ETM provided all CAD drawings and designed diversion routes for temporary road closures on Salcombe Road and Cadogan Road.
  • During night closures and diversions, there was an ETM traffic management operative on site.
  • ETM installed and managed temporary traffic lights during existing traffic light upgrade.
  • ETM undertook all line marking at night following resurfacing work using anti-skid high friction surface paint.
